China OSINT: Is The Name Fake?

You're reviewing a leaked database. You find a name: 张三 (Zhang San). You start building a profile.

Stop. You're chasing a ghost.

Hope your 2026 is off to a great start. We're opening the year with a fundamental but important topic — one that matters a lot when you investigate country-specific ecosystems like China. Before you investigate a Chinese name, make sure it isn't the Chinese equivalent of "John Doe."

张三 is China's "John Doe" — a placeholder used in legal templates, test data, and training documents. Not a real person. Never was.

The Standard Placeholders

张三 (Zhāng Sān) — John Doe
李四 (Lǐ Sì) — Jane Doe
王五 (Wáng Wǔ) — Third party
赵六 (Zhào Liù) — Fourth party

The pattern is a common surname plus a number (三=3, 四=4, 五=5, 六=6). If you see names following this sequence in a dataset, you're looking at test records — not real users.

Anonymization Markers

"某" (Mǒu) = "A certain…"

This character signals deliberate redaction:

张某 (Zhāng mǒu) — "a person surnamed Zhang" (real name hidden)
某某 (mǒu mǒu) — "so-and-so"
某公司 (mǒu gōngsī) — "a certain company"

When you see 某 in court documents or news articles, someone real exists — but the name is legally protected. The investigative value is in the surrounding details, not the placeholder.

"甲方 / 乙方" = Party A / Party B

Contract shorthand. The actual names appear elsewhere in the document — or the document is a template.

Where This Burns You

Leaked databases: test records with 张三, 李四, 王五 in sequence look like user data. They're not.
Internal documents: a training manual discussing "张三's security violation" isn't evidence of an incident — it's an example scenario.
News reports: Chinese media uses 某 to anonymize. "张某, a 35-year-old man from Beijing" describes a real person whose name you won't find by searching 张某.
Court filings: legal examples use placeholder names. Don't mistake procedural illustrations for case evidence.
